A referral is not required for Physiotherapy.
Your insurance provider may require a doctors referral to cover Athletic Therapy or Massage Therapy visits. We recommend you check with your insurance provider prior to booking your appointment.
While Athletic Therapy and Physiotherapy are two different professions, there is little difference in the quality of care provided by either therapist type.
Athletic Therapists focus solely on musculoskeletal injuries, meaning injuries to bone, muscle or joints. Physiotherapists can also treat these types of injuries, as well as neurological and cardiovascular health issues.
Both professional designations provide patient centred care that involves injury assessment, injury prevention, exercise based rehabilitation and more.
Some insurance companies also cover visits with Athletic Therapy and Physiotherapy differently, so we recommend checking with your insurance provider prior to booking.

Things you should bring with you to your appointment include your insurance information, a copy of your doctors referral (if required) and any copies of reports from your doctor.
We also recommend wearing clothing that is loose and easy to move around in. If you have a lower body injury, shorts or capri pants are preferable, while t-shirts and tank tops are good for upper body injuries. We also recommend you bring a pair of clean indoor shoes or runners.
MPI and WCB do not cover treatments with a massage therapist.
They do cover visits for Physiotherapy and Athletic Therapy.
Manitoba Health may cover a portion of your visit costs with a Physiotherapist if you have had Total Knee or Total Hip Replacement surgery.
